The spiked abdomen spider = Spined micrathena

And since y’all were just needing to know – that funky spider with the spiked abdomen?

Well, she is a Spined micrathena. I found a lot of good info on it from the University of Arkansas:

These spiders also are called “orb weavers” and are generally the source of the webs we run into when hiking through the woods (the females are the web builders, constructing their webs between trees/shrubs). Never be the first hiker in the morning (ha)!

On a side note, these spiders are harmless to us humans….but they give flies, gnats, skeeters, and any other flying insect holy heck if they get caught in the orb weavers’ intricate webs.
