Not for the faint of heart

I’m learning to be a country girl. What does that mean exactly? Well, there are many layers to that question. From learning to operate machinery, to becoming one with the land. But for this post, I am leaning more towards the concept of being self-sufficient. With A LOT of help from our friends, I learned over the weekend how to butcher a deer carcass.

I will warn you that you will see some photos that you may think alarming (I would hope not, but it could happen). What I really hope is that our appreciation for where our food comes from will grow.

Along the line of appreciation, many thanks are owed to our friend and neighbor, Donnie, who shot the deer, cleaned it and gave us the meat, and to our friend, Joe, who came over to teach me the way of harvesting the meat. It was educational, fun, and resulted in filling our freezer!
